Producer, Director, Editor...Ray Harper's
career in television and film started accidentally. To
put himself through
Art School, he got a part time job as a film editor
at the National Film Board. Editing hooked him and he's
been sculpting films and television programs ever since.
Now he does a lot more producing and directing, but
he
still loves to get into the editing room and put programs
together. He still approaches each new project with
the same enthusiasm as he did in the good old days, before
he knew how much he didn't know. Over the years Ray
has
become know as a master of the art of the possible
-- his work is described as innovative, honest, and elegant.
Ray Harper is a producer, director, editor, and occasional
writer who has been working in film and television production
since 1975. Early on he ran his own film post-production
company and taught college and university courses in
art and design. Then he spent sixteen very busy and
highly
productive years at ACCESS Network (a provincial educational
broadcaster). When he left ACCESS he was acting Senior
Producer. Now Ray is back working in the private sector
producing, directing and editing. He currently owns and
operates: NetworkONE Productions and is a partner in
Summit Films Ltd.
Ray has edited many documentary, dramatic and educational
films for ACCESS Network, TVOntario, CBC and CBC North,
CTV, Discovery and Vision, as well as many National Film
Board productions. Harper edited Anne Wheeler's A
War Story which has won awards worldwide and has been
translated into more than twenty languages. More recently,
he was
producer, director and writer of the 13-part ACCESS Network/NFB
co-production, Brittain on Brittain. Harper was the co-producer
and associate director of the Gemini Award winning NFB
film, Donald Brittain: Filmmaker, and was the director,
writer and editor of the NFB film Coppermine. Ray has
also won many other national and international awards
including
the New York Film Festival.
Ray has just finished a National Film Board documentary
project on single custodial fathers called Life with
Dad, and a Nature/Wildlife documentary called The Return
of
the Peregrine -- for CBC's The Nature of Things. He's
currently working on a video about Spina Bifida, a documentary
for
NFB on Polio, and a 13 part nature documentary series
called Discovering Wildness for Discovery Channel. |
